Close Reading: Practice and Planning for Elementary Classrooms

Close reading is an instructional routine in which students learn to critically examine a text, especially through multiple readings. Close reading requires that students examine the structures of a text passage including the way the text is organized, the choice of vocabulary, the author’s purpose, and its key details, arguments, and inferential meanings. Close reading is meant to build the habits of readers when they engage with a complex text passage. Although the practice has been used at the secondary levels in the past, the process is relatively new to elementary teachers.

This workshop will provide participants with practice in close reading passages and guide them through planning a close reading lesson to use in their classrooms.

Participants should bring one or two complex text passages to
use for planning a lesson.

Featured Presenter: Carol Hailey McLean

 

Carol Hailey McLean has taught middle and high school English for more than 30 years. She served as the English department chair at Shawnee Mission North High School for 18 years and was the K-12 Reading/Language Arts Resource Specialist for Shawnee Mission USD 512. Carol conducts staff development for districts, including implementation of the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards, and assists schools in developing school improvement plans. In addition, she is a consultant for the College Board and a Ruby Payne cadre trainer for A Framework for Understanding Poverty.
