Classes: Grades 4-7

ATMTC Academy believes that an education in the performing arts begins with solid technique training, coupled with a variety of performing experiences. Whether you are a recreational student or a professional hopeful, ATMTC Academy offers a unique approach to musical theater and theater education through the combination of traditional musical theater and theater classes, and student productions.

Fall 13 week semester begins Tuesday, September 8th and concludes Sunday, December 13th.

Not sure what level best suits your student? Dance placements will be held on August 2nd from 3-5pm and Sugust 20th from 6-8 pm. Appointments are required, register by selecting the event below.

Students learn a variety of approaches, methods, and acting techniques with concentrated work in improvisation, character development, and scene work. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. (Advancement level option after two semesters, or by instructor permission: Acting Technique II.)

In Acting Technique II, students learn a variety of approaches, methods and acting techniques with concentrated work in, monologue study, stage direction, script analysis, and critique. Pre-requisite of Acting Technique I is required, or by instructor permission. (Advancement level option after two semesters, or by instructor permission: Actor’s Workshop- Available Spring15.)

Facilitated by an experienced voice teacher and musical theater professional, students will work on the skills necessary to technically and aesthetically perform musical theater repertoire. Both up-tempo and ballad songs will be chosen for students’ vocal ranges and acting abilities.

Actors Workshop SC/ST.III (6-12 Grade) - 9/13/2015 1:15 PM - 12/13/2015 3:15 PM
In Actors Workshop III, students will sharpen their talent through the process of rehearsal and presentation of scene work and a one-act piece, allowing them to identify acting habits that will inhibit growth in textual work, character development, technical polish and interplay. Pre-requisite of Acting Technique II is required, or by instructor permission. (Once advanced to level III, students will continue to work a different play each semester, culminating in The Academy Acting Showcase to be performed at the Glen Echo Main stage on Sunday, May 15, 2016.)
Ballet I (Annual Enrollment) - 9/14/2015 4:45 PM - 5/9/2016 5:55 PM
Ballet I is for the novice or beginner student. Core body strength, arms, and correct turn-out based on a student’s anatomy and muscular development are emphasized at the barre. Center work is focused on the basics of adagio (slow controlled combination), preparation for pirouettes, simple turns across the floor, petit allégro and grand allégro. Before advancing to Ballet II, students must be able to execute these basic exercises. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course.
Ballet II (Annual Enrollment) - 9/14/2015 6:00 PM - 5/9/2016 7:10 PM
Ballet II is for the intermediate student, who possesses a strong foundation and basic vocabulary in Ballet technique. Students must audition for placement at this level. Ballet II continues to strengthen technique and flexibility, with the addition of more advanced turns and step combinations. Before advancing to Ballet III, students must be able to execute these exercises safely and correctly. Pre-requisite of Ballet I is required, or by instructor permission.
Ballet III* Grades 6-12 (Annual Enrollment) - 9/9/2015 6:00 PM - 5/11/2016 7:10 PM
Ballet III is the advanced level of ballet, for the student who is able to master complex movements and combinations. Barre and center combinations move faster, and become more complex than in previous study. Turn-out based on individual ability and strength continues to be emphasized along with posture and core strength. The student is introduced to complex rhythms, pirouettes, and jumps. Proper placement is continually reinforced by students applying those concepts to the exercises and movements they learn. At this level, head and arm movements are coordinated and synchronized and the memorization of steps and musicality are further developed. Pre-requisite of Ballet II is required, or by instructor permission.

Ballet/Jazz Combo I is for the novice or beginner student. The combination course allows students to gain a fundamental knowledge of and preparation for the dance forms of both ballet and jazz. Classes consist of learning the standard placement of feet and arms, basic terminology, barre exercises, floor work and simple jazz combinations. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course.
Ballet/Jazz Combo I* Grades 6-12 (Fall Semester Only) - 9/13/2015 1:15 PM - 12/13/2015 3:15 PM
Ballet/Jazz Combo I is for the novice or beginner student. The combination course allows students to gain a fundamental knowledge of and preparation for the dance forms of both ballet and jazz. Jazz I is for the novice or beginner student. Jazz is a prominent form incorporated in Broadway dance. Classes include intensive strengthening, stretching techniques, across the floor combinations, leaps, and turns. Students will gain knowledge of terminology, strength, flexibility, and an understanding of Broadway Jazz technique. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course.
Jazz II (Annual Enrollment) - 9/9/2015 7:15 PM - 5/11/2016 8:25 PM
Jazz II is for the intermediate student who possesses a strong foundation and basic vocabulary in Jazz technique. Jazz II continues to hone and strengthen technique in the form, with the addition of more advanced technique, and step combinations. Continued improvement of core strength and flexibility, will be of focus. Pre-requisite of Jazz I is required, or by instructor permission.

Jazz III is for the advanced student who is able to master complex movements and combinations. These are the highest level and most advanced students prepping for professional or collegiate study. Classes include intensive strengthening warm-ups, stretching techniques to elongate and encourage muscle strength, across the floor movements, leaps, turns and center combination work. Students will gain increasing knowledge of Jazz terminology, greater strength and flexibility, and an understanding of ever-evolving musical theater Jazz technique. Private Voice Lesson Interest Form - 9/1/2015
Work independently with a professional vocalist and instructor. Each session will include intensive work on vocal technique and study of repertoire suitable for the individual student. Private lessons provide individual instruction geared towards the specific goals, needs and aspirations of each student. No prerequisite required. Previous music study, including completion of Intro to Voice class or Semi-Private Voice Lessons, strongly recommended. Open to students grades 4+.
Student Production: Alice in Wonderland, Jr. - 12/28/2015
Grades 4-6 No Audition required. First Rehearsal: December 28, 2015 (10am-4pm) (Rehearsals in Wintergreen Plaza/Tech & Performances in Glen Echo) On a perfect summer day in the park, Alice sees a White Rabbit hurrying by. Curious to know where he is going, she follows him into a dark tunnel, and thus begins the adventure…! Join ATMTC Academy as Alice, the Mad Hatter, The White Rabbit, Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum and the entire cast of Lewis Carroll characters perform this musical journey on the ATMTC main stage in Glen Echo, MD! The program begins right after the Christmas holiday, and culminates about a month later: a whirlwind once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students, who won’t have to miss a day of school to participate! (MCPS attendees, only). Tuition: $800. Rehearsals begin December 28, 2015. Performances January 23 & 24, 2016. Tap I is for the novice or beginner student. “Broadway Tap” is the chosen sub-style taught by ATMTC, which incorporates upper body and use of arms in addition to a focus on percussive rhythm and footwork. Classes emphasize the development and strengthening of basic tap technique and terminology highlighting the importance of rhythm and sound. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course.
