2/22/2016 7:00 PMCultivating a Friendly Mind
Upon beginning a meditation practice, we are often surprised by the sheer quantity, strength and persistence of difficult mind states. We sit down with the intention of attending peacefully to our experience, and find our minds full of restlessness, anger, disappointment, fear, judgment of others and especially, judgment of ourselves. Does it have to be this way? In this class, we will build upon our mindfulness practice to explore a group of four traditional concentration practices known as the Brahma Viharas, which systematically familiarize the mind and heart with healthier and happier states. Each week will introduce a different practice, all of which turn us gently towards new ways of understanding and relating to ourselves, to our loved ones, and to our world. As we explore these practices, we will see that, rather than feeling trapped in patterns of painful reactivity, it is possible to cultivate a mind filled with friendliness for ourselves and for others. This class is designed for people with some experience in mindfulness meditation, including graduates of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program. A commitment to a minimum of 30 minutes per day of home practice is required for participation. (recorded guidance will be available)
