Course Description

This learning opportunity for teachers is an add-on to the MiCareer Quest Career Exploration Event ( happening at DeVos Place.


Participants will receive a FREE Arduino kit, courtesy of West Michigan Tech Talent (


The day will begin with an overview of West Michigan Tech Talent and their mission, followed by an exclusive opportunity for teachers to meet with employers on display at MiCareer Quest.


Lunch (provided) will feature a debrief of the skills required for technology jobs and will be followed by a hands-on coding activity with Arduinos that can be taken back to a classroom.




Gerry Verwey; Rick Mushing; Ron Houtman

Gerry Verwey serves as a Career Readiness Consultant, STEM Consultant, and program director for a new teacher mentorship program at Kent ISD.  In his role as a Career Readiness Consultant, Gerry works with local educators to integrate career exploration and soft skills into their classrooms.  As a STEM Consultant, he provides STEM curriculum training, development, and implementation services for K-12 educators.  Gerry was a science teacher for 16 years, most recently at Kent Innovation High. He has been nominated for the Michigan Teacher of the Year, Michigan Science Teacher of the Year, and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science.

In his role as a STEM consultant for the Kent Intermediate School District, Rick Mushing provides STEM curriculum training, development and implementation services for K-12 educators. Mr. Mushing’s prior experience includes 6 years teaching Pre-Engineering and Architecture to 11-12 grade students, 3 years as a Global Engineering Consultant, and 18 years as the Vice President of a local Engineering firm. His background includes business management, engineering design and software development. Mr. Mushing has received numerous industry awards and technical certifications.

Ron has worked at the Kent Intermediate School District and the Kent Career Technical Center for 15 years both teaching in the classroom and supporting educator professional development. He is an experienced instructional technologist with experience in instructional design, development of online, blended, and technology enhanced courses and experiences. Ron has many years’ experience in helping others use technology to enhance their teaching and learning, classroom engagement and collaboration.  Ron is a Google Certified Trainer and Adobe Education Leader (AEL).
