Course Description

WHAT IS IT?
Teachers in Industry is a professional development opportunity for educators to learn more about local employers and community organizations through on-site visits and presentations.

WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES?

  • To highlight information about local employer needs, labor market trends, and new technologies relevant for teachers;
  • To help educators connect their classroom content to real-world applications and business practices so that students are college- and career-ready; and
  • To encourage meaningful collaboration between educators and the business community.


FEATURED SITES

AutoMatrix: Worried that robots are taking over all manufacturing jobs? Think again. Learn how the role has simply shifted for some to include programming, fabrication, assembly, installation and servicing of some of the robotic components required for today’s manufacturing. A division of ArtiFlex Manufacturing, AutoMatrix provides solutions, services and parts for automation of manufacturing systems.

Erhardt Construction: Started by Larry Erhardt in 1962, this respected local construction company has helped to define the Grand Rapids landscape with projects ranging from work for GVSU (from its very beginnings as Grand Valley State College, which opened in 1963), to local hospitals, to buildings for Grand Rapids Public Schools. Some of their most iconic work includes the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel Tower, Van Andel Arena, the Van Andel Institute and DeVos Place.

Fathom: Embrace the deep. This start-up company, comprised of recent Hope College graduates, will share how an idea started a journey towards a business. Hear them tell their story and consider ways you might help students not just look to the skies, but build curiosity in exploring all that lies below the surface.

The Career Readiness Department can reimburse schools up to $100 for substitutes used for Teachers in Industry events.Complete the attached form (click here) and submit it to the email indicated on the form prior to the event.

Participants will meet at Kent ISD, with transportation provided to sites. Space is limited, so please only register if you are able to attend the entire day. Lunch will be provided.
