Webinar Description

The vision of the MiELA Network Institute is to build statewide capacity to address the literacy demands of the CCSS through a sustainable multi-year state network of K-12 ELA teachers. Participants will grow their own learning around curriculum, instruction, and assessment for the purpose of supporting the learning of colleagues and students.

Cross-disciplinary literacies show a SIGNIFICANT increase in standardized tests in 3rd grade in ALL students. New research reveals that when science, reading, and math come together in rigorous hands-on projects, student collaboration, engagement, and achievement can soar. Check out this video from Edutopia to learn more!

Dr. Elizabeth Moje, one of the key researchers behind the Essential Instructional Practices for Disciplinary Literacy: Grades 6-12, explains that disciplinary literacy incorporates the “belief that each discipline has its own literacy and that by stripping away the one-size-fits-all literacy 'strategies' and engaging students in the way that historians and scientists [among other disciplinary experts] actually read and write, literacy learning will be central, no longer a side dish” Read more

All districts across the state of Michigan and beyond are invited to send teachers, teacher leaders, and administrators from all levels and content areas who are interested in diving deeply into work where we explore the significance of science and other related content instruction, and the impact that it can have on literacy. Sessions this year will be showcasing cross-disciplinary resources. Join us to engage in how this is transferable and implemented into the classroom.
