Truly comprehending our number system is foundational to success in mathematics. We often assume if students can understand the connection between 1 and 10, they'll understand the connection between 100 and 1,000. This is rarely the case, and it's just one of the fallacies related to number sense. Presenter Ryan Flessner will provide you with information about children's number development, activities to improve their number sense, and assessments that will allow you to drive your instruction in ways that can differentiate for a variety of learners.
Ryan Flessner is an Associate Professor of Teacher Education at Butler University. Prior to this, he taught elementary school in Indianapolis, New York City, and Madison, Wisconsin. His teaching and research interests include math education, teacher education, practitioner inquiry, and issues of equity, diversity, and social justice.
