In this interactive, full-day workshop, lead author Dr. Diane Staehr Fenner will facilitate a session on scaffolding instruction and teaching academic language to English Learners (ELs). Participants will define scaffolding and explore three categories of scaffolding using hands-on activities. They will also apply research-based strategies for selecting academic vocabulary for ELs and try out supporting ELs’ academic language development at the word, sentence, and discourse levels. Finally, they will collaborate to analyze a text and develop a scaffolded lesson plan around it that integrates academic language so that ELs and other students who need support with academic language will benefit.
Diane Staehr Fenner, Ph.D. is the president of SupportEd. Diane is an author of four books on EL education. Her most recent book is the best-selling Unlocking English Learners’ Potential: Strategies for Making Content Accessible (2017) (co-authored with SupportEd Principal Associate Dr. Sydney Snyder).
