This workshop is intended for a broad audience. Students learn fundamentals of vegetative propagation and techniques for propagating southeastern native plants by means of stem and root cuttings. Class includes hands-on propagation and a tour of the vegetative propagation facilities of NCBG.

About the Instructor

A resident of Durham, NC, Matt Gocke is the nursery and greenhouse manager at the North Carolina Botanical Garden. His responsibilities at the Garden include seed and vegetative propagation of southeastern US native plants for use in the NCBG habitats and landscapes and for sale to the general public. Prior to his work at NCBG, Matt landscaped and was a Master's student and staff member at the NC State University Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources. His research focus was developing rooting protocol for stem cuttings of native tree species including pine, sweetgum and a variety of oak species.


Katherine Meehan lives in Durham, NC. She is the nursery assistant at the North Carolina Botanical Garden. Her responsibilities include propagating southeastern native plants, via seeds and cuttings, for use in the NCBG landscape and for sale to the general public. Katherine previously worked at a local watershed organization in Durham, where she designed and installed rain gardens (planted with southeastern native plants) to help mitigate residential stormwater runoff into the watershed. She has a B.A. in Anthropology from UC Berkeley, and a certificate in Agricultural Sustainability from Central Carolina Community College.
