Coffee Unites the World – How Your Morning Cup of Coffee Affects Birds, Economics, and the Land

Join two local experts as they discuss coffee farming and processing and how that impacts wildlife (especially birds), the land, and the people. Enjoy a coffee tasting from Carrboro Coffee Roasters as part of this program.
John will highlight the coffee growing/harvesting process from northern Nicaragua and discuss birds and other wildlife found among various 'wildlife-friendly' coffee farms. He will share his research findings on bird species that nest here in North Carolina like the beautiful Golden-winged Warbler. Scott will talk about his involvement in coffee farming and processing, how the many factors involved can affect the final cup of coffee, and how it all intersects with the environment and the people who are so closely tied to the land. As an added Saturday morning bonus, we will include a coffee tasting from Carrboro Coffee Roasters featuring examples of brewed coffee from their Farmer Direct Relationship sustainability program.

About the presenters:
John began co-leading ecotours to Nicaragua in 2005, along with some limited bird surveys. In 2012, he began collaborative research on the Golden-winged Warbler. He is a research curator with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, where he has worked since 1988. He has served on Audubon NC's Important Bird Areas Technical Committee and as Chair for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission Scientific Advisory Council on Birds. He is also an active native plant gardener.
As owner of award-winning Caffe Driade & Open Eye Café in Carrboro-Chapel Hill, NC, along with Carrboro Coffee Roasters, Scott has had many opportunities to travel, teach and learn about coffee production, harvest, selection, blends and trends for the last 20+ years. He is an active educator in the industry in all disciplines and consults for companies, restaurants, and cafes nationally & around the world while also serving as a World Coffee Events Representative and Certified Head Judge for the Cup of Excellence Program and the World Barista Championship for the last 14 years. Scott trains coffee professionals as a consultant, in the U.S. and around the world, for skill, knowledge and competition. Scott's obsession with discovering, roasting & sharing phenomenal coffee transitioned into creating personal, long-term direct working relationships with farmers and producers around the world.
