Winter Flora - Fridays
with Geoffrey Neal, Assistant Curator, Coker Arboretum

Dates:  Fridays, January 15, February 5, and February 26, 2021 inclement weather date March 5

Times: 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM

Fee: $135 ($122 NCBG members). 

 

This course is designed for a broad audience as well as for students who are enrolled in either of the Garden’s certificate programs. Field trips and exercises provide experience in the use of identification keys and recognition of plants in their winter condition in natural settings. Enjoy discovering that many trees and shrubs are easily recognized when not covered with leaves!

 

No prerequisites.

 

A copy of Winter Tree Finder by May and Tom Watts will be required for this course. Books are available in the Garden Shop and on Amazon: Winter Tree Finder.

About the Instructor

Geoffrey Neal has been working with plants for the past 25 years. He has worked in private gardens, residential landscapes and independent garden centers. He is currently serving as assistant curator at the Coker Arboretum, a 5-acre ornamental and teaching garden begun in 1903 on the UNC Chapel Hill campus and a part of NCBG since 1982. He is an ISA certified arborist and a part-time graduate student in ecology at UNC.

  • Bring a mask with you. Wear a mask at all times indoors and when you are unable to maintain a 6' distance outdoors.

  • Wash your hands often.

  • Wipe off your work area before class with disinfecting wipes that will be available in the classroom.


By doing these things, you are doing your part to keep others safe both on campus and in our local communities.
