Insect Photography

The world of the insect is an amazing and fun place; it is a world that most never deeply see! Learn the techniques to get the most from your cameras and lenses and how to create amazing close-up insect images. Learn how to use unique macro tools to shape and control the lighting and the three major macro problems and their multiple solutions.


Topics include: best equipment for insect photography, macro equipment on a budget, field and lighting techniques with insects, and a primer on insects within an ecological context. Instruction will emphasize the use of DSLRs and point-and-shoot cameras but students with camera phones are also most welcome.


Our class will be a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on, so expect to shoot 50-100 images per class. Environmental Education Criteria II CEUs available (NCEE).

About the Instructor

Chris Moses's interest in photography started when he was 8 years old: Polaroid, 35mm, 110 film, and Super 8.

Today, Chris is a photography instructor and award-winning nature photographer. He pioneered the use of nature photography with international ESL instruction with the creation of his third set of English language lessons for non-native speakers: Foto English Lessons:

Chris lives in Chapel Hill and teaches nearby at the UNC-Chapel Hill and Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro, NC.

Some of the locations he has photographed include the 1000's Islands, NY, Seoul, South Korea, Blue Ridge Parkway, NC, Great Smokies National Park, TN, Grand Canyon National Park, AZ, Zion National Park, UT, Bryce Canyon NP, UT, Similan Islands, Andeman Sea, Thailand, Denali National Park, AK, Kenai Fiords National Park, AK, and the Big Island of Hawaii.

As a photographer, he has participated in a number of juried competitions including a favorite, the Grandfather Mountain Annual Nature Photography Contest. As a photographic coach, he seeks to guide and inspire learners on their photographic adventures.
