Capturing Nature in Words

with Catherine Bollinger, Writer, Editor & Avid Gardener

Date: Saturdays, March 30 and April 6

Time: 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Fee: $72 ($65 Members)

This class will encourage participants to notice nature in their own backyards and gardens and record their observations. We will explore a range of journaling options and hybrids that will meet the goals of creative writers attempting to deepen their work with vivid natural world details, to gardeners trying to track when flowers bloom, to hikers who want to remember a mountaintop rhododendron tunnel in full, bee-buzzing bloom. Participants will leave the class with sharpened observation skills, methods they prefer for recording and using those observations, and a level of comfort to continue journaling after the class ends. Journaling is about learning; any science or art that springs from that process is a bonus, and anyone at any skill level can journal.

About the Instructor

A professional writer and editor for almost 40 years, Catherine Bollinger’s favorite writing subjects always derive from her observations of the natural world. Her nature-related publications include articles in Triangle Gardener and the NC Botanical Garden’s magazine, Conservation Gardener, where her latest article will appear in the spring edition. She also wrote a column and feature articles on gardening topics for the Raleigh News & Observer. Her blog, Piedmont Gardener (www.piedmontgardener.com), which she began in 2011, often features her observations of the “five acres of green chaos” she shares with her spouse. Catherine has taught business writing classes for the North Carolina Writers Network and lectured on gardening topics to garden clubs and master gardening groups.
