Introduction to Therapeutic Horticulture
a partnership of NCBG with the NC State Extension Gardener Program
with Sally Haskett, Horticultural Therapist Registered, NCBG, and Emilee Weaver, NCBG Therapeutic Horticulture Program Manager
Class Dates: May 23 - July 3, 2022 (6-week course)
The Introduction to Therapeutic Horticulture course is the first in a series of online courses that teach the theory, practice, and profession of Therapeutic Horticulture.
This six-week course is a great way to learn and build foundational knowledge about this growing therapeutic practice. It is intended for a wide audience, including allied health professionals who may want to incorporate plant-based activities into their existing practices, master gardeners or volunteers who work with community members with diverse needs and abilities, educators and other interested people.
Students explore how Therapeutic Horticulture supports human health & wellness, including physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and social needs. The course structure promotes vibrant engagement via discussion threads and assignment feedback. This introductory course provides a unique opportunity to research, discuss, and reflect on people/plant relationships.
The only requirement is internet access for this fully online, self-paced, non-credit course. There is open access 24/7 plus an additional six months of resource materials access after the course formally ends. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available through the Office of Continuing Education at UNC.
