This course builds on the information covered in Plant Taxonomy and focuses on the study of plant diversity by targeting twenty major and fairly stable plant families found in North Carolina. Classroom discussions of evolutionary adaptations and relationships are combined with field studies in the Garden and close-up examination of representative examples.  


Prerequisite: Plant Taxonomy.

About the Instructor

Sam Tessel is a botanist and ecologist specializing in the flora of the southern Appalachian Mountains and on the effects of seed dispersal on patterns of plant distribution and diversity. She has an M.S. in Conservation Biology from Frostburg State University and a PhD in Ecology from UNC Chapel Hill. She has a special affinity for sedges and has worked on many projects including floristic inventories, rare plant surveys, and analyses of vegetation patterns. She is currently a research affiliate known to frequent the UNC Herbarium.
