Seeds and the Essence of Creation: A Poetry Reading
with Jay Bryan, Melissa Dowland, Joanie McLean, Gary Phillips, Maura High

Date: Sunday, October 15, 2017 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM

Every seed includes the essence of what it will become. Just as the flora and fauna of our environment, and even we ourselves, spring from tiny seeds, so works of creative inspiration grow from our seed thoughts. Five local poets bring these seeds to life through the work they will share with you. Free. Preregistration Required.

About the poets

Gary Phillips is the poet laureate of Carrboro, North Carolina. He is a writer, naturalist and entrepreneur. Gary was once chair of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners. His book of poetry, The Boy The Brave Girls, was printed in 2016 by Human Error Publishing (Wendell, Mass).

Joanie McLean is co-owner of Mellow Marsh Farm, a native plant nursery.  She has published two chapbooks, is the winner of the New Millennium Prize for Poetry, and a three-time finalist for the James Applewhite Prize.  Her poems have appeared in many journals, most recently The North Carolina Literary Review.

With the Arts Committee, Jay Bryan helped to establish Carrboro's Poets Council and coordinated poetry readings on Carrboro Day for fifteen years. He compiled and edited the Carrboro 100th Birthday Poetry Anthology, has a chapbook, Selected Poems, published by Finishing Line Press, 2013, and self-published “Haiku for Carroll”.

Melissa Dowland is a naturalist and educator at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. She has the privilege of sharing the wonders of the natural world with educators from across NC. She enjoys immersing herself (and groups she leads) in nature and sharing her observations and experiences through poetry.

She is a longtime volunteer of The Nature Conservancy and supporter of the NC Botanical Garden, and author of the chapbook The Garden of Persuasions, from Jacar Press.
