Friday Pre-Conference Tours:

-Carol Woods Continuing Care Retirement Community, Chapel Hill, NC pre-conference tour:

In existence for over 40 years, Carol Woods retirement community in Chapel Hill attracts residents seeking an in-town location with close proximity to educational, cultural and medical resources. Engaged residents, top-rated healthcare, a financially strong foundation and a beautiful campus have created Carol Woods’ reputation as one of the country’s leading continuing care retirement communities. Unlike other retirement communities, Carol Woods is unique in that it is a dementia-inclusive community.

Gardens and gardening have always been a part of the Carol Woods experience. In recent years residents have gained expanded opportunities with therapeutic horticulture and nature-related classes and activities. The tour will include various gardening spaces, including the newest on campus, where residents can actively engage with their environment.

-Central Regional Hospital, Butner, NC pre-conference tour:

Central Regional Hospital (CRH) is the largest of the three state-managed psychiatric hospitals in North Carolina. The secure, 400 bed facility provides mental health treatment for children, adolescents, adults, the geriatric population, and minimum, medium, and maximum-security forensic patients who have been deemed unable to proceed in a court of law due to their mental health diagnosis. Though many of the patients have co-occurring diagnoses, at least 85% have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.

Due to a wealth of support from CRH administration, the hospital offers a wide range of vocational, psychosocial, and therapeutic horticultural therapy programming for the adult population. The HT program is managed by Emilee Vanderneut who is the Program Manager of the Community Living Program and conducted by three full-time horticultural therapists who lead three vocational HT crews and four HT treatment groups year-round. In total, the HT team treats 50 patients a day in therapeutic groups and employs (paid minimum wage) 15 patients who maintain the hospital's grounds, HT programming sites, and indoor growing operation.

The tour will include an orientation to the facility, an outdoor growing space, indoor growing facilities, and a presentation of the HT program.
