Join the co-founders of NC State University's Natural Learning Initiative (NLI) for this talk on how being in contact with nature broadens children’s play and learning experience, contributes to positive physical, social-emotional, and cognitive development, exposes children to living ecosystems, and stimulates their curiosity to explore the wonders of nature early in life.

NLI was founded in 2000 with the purpose of promoting the importance of the natural environment in the daily experience of all children, through environmental design, action research, education, and dissemination of information.

About the Speaker

Nilda Cosco, PhD, is Director of Programs, The Natural Learning Initiative; Research Associate Professor, College of Design. Dr. Cosco holds a degree in Educational Psychology, Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina and a Ph.D. in Landscape Architecture, School of Landscape Architecture, Heriot Watt University / Edinburgh University, Scotland. She coordinates state-wide comprehensive projects including Preventing Obesity by Design (POD) and she is principal investigator (PI) for the USDA-NIFA randomized controlled trial Childcare Outdoor Learning Environments as Active Food Systems: Effectiveness of the Preventing Obesity by Design (POD) Gardening Component. In January 2000, Dr. Cosco co-founded with Professor Robin Moore the Natural Learning Initiative (NLI) at the College of Design, NC State University.


Robin Moore, Dipl.Arch, MCP, Hon. ASLA, is Professor of Landscape Architecture and co-founder with Dr. Nilda Cosco of the Natural Learning Initiative (NLI), NC State University. He holds degrees in architecture (London) and city planning (MIT). NLI is an interdisciplinary, community engagement, design assistance, and action research unit dedicated to children and families in underserved communities. Moore is an international authority on the design of urban nature play and learning environments. He is former president of the International Play Association and former chair of the Environmental Design Research Association. His many research and professional publications include “Design for Healthy Childhoods and a Healthy Planet,” in Biophilic Design.
