Explore the fall landscape of this 84-acre natural area in northeast Durham, and learn about how the Garden manages this unique property. Surrounded on three sides by the Eno River, Penny's Bend Nature Preserve encompasses mature forests and prairies with regionally rare plants. 

Much of this hike is on primitive trails over uneven terrain, with one short, steep climb up from the river. Wear sturdy footwear and bring water (and a walking stick if you use one). Meeting spot supplied upon registration.

About the Instructor

Ed Harrison earned a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management from Duke, with concentrations in environmental impact analysis and in plant community ecology. He’s been an active member of the Penny’s Bend Nature Preserve Management Committee since 1998, leading the Spring and Fall public tours for the Garden since 1999. Ed began doing similar tours for Mason Farm Biological Reserve in 2007.
