Methodist Health System employees who provide their employee ID number on the registration form may take this course at no cost. NMC students can attend at no cost (they do not receive CE). NMC Alumni receive 75% off of the program's value.


Nurses, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, radiologic technologists, and other healthcare professionals working with cardiac patients.


This symposium will explore current evidence-based practices for heart failure. Topics include initial heart failure diagnosis, new medications, management, bundled payments, patient education, case studies, and more!


Program Objectives:

  • Indicate when a cardiology referral is appropriate. Recognize signs, symptoms, and lab results of beginning stages of heart failure. Distinguish heart failure care with cardioMEMS.
  • Interpret and modify care based on symptoms and cardioMEMS data.Identify techniques to encourage and educate cardiovascular patients. Indicate ways to keep heart failure patients engaged in their own care.
  • State new medications to manage symptoms in heart failure patients. Compare heart failure medications with their benefits and side effects.
  • Determine what type of activities assist heart failure patient's rehabilitation. Indicate the typical schedule of cardiac rehabilitation.
  • Review dietary recommendations for heart failure patients. Recognize food items with hidden salt.
  • Discuss the economics associated with heart failure patient's care. Explain the impact a readmission has on payment to the health system.
  • Examine cardiomyopathy recommendations. Specify when it is appropriate to implant an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
  • Explain long term heart failure management. Specify heart failure treatment options.
  • Outline palliative care. Indicate how and when to introduce palliative care to heart failure patients.
  • Analyze case studies, identify care management recommendations.



In order to receive continuing education hours for this event, you must meet the following completion requirements:

  • Attendance at the entire activity
  • Completion/submission of evaluation form within 30 days of the program

Respiratory Therapist: This program meets the continuing education criteria for 5.75 clock hours for Nebraska and Iowa Respiratory Care Practitioners.


Education Credit: 5.75 Education hours. Nebraska Methodist College Professional Development assigns education hours based on 60 minutes of classroom instruction for each offering. Participants may use these for their professional continuing education hours and toward re-licensure if so approved within the standards and guidelines of their discipline.
