Did you know that children's early math and attention skills (K-Gr3) are the best predictors of later school success? Did you know that play-based, as opposed to 'drill-and-practice' activities result in better academic and attention skills?
Instead of trying to make children love the math they hate, make them a math they'll love. The focus of today's webinar will be like a treasure hunt! We'll learn that math is everywhere, but hidden in plain sight. We'll discover how and where to look for the math around us—turning the world into a giant classroom filled with lessons that are hands-on, engaging and fun.
Lynda Colgan is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at Queen’s. The focus of her research and outreach is to find ways to support parental engagement in math. As the Faculty Liaison for the Queen’s Let’s Talk Science group, Director of Education Community Outreach, and Founder of Science Rendezvous Kingston she has hosted more than 150 workshops related to her research and passion—myth-busting about mathematics and science—dispelling the belief that they are hard, dead subjects for which only certain people have a gene.
The content for this webinar will be covered in the first 30 minutes; facilitators will remain for another 15 minutes for further questions and discussion.
