Course Description:
This presentation will provide the necessary training to satisfy the hours the Virginia Board of Dentistry requires.

18VAC60-21-250 Requirements for Continuing Education, states 'A dentist who administers or monitors patients under general anesthesia, deep sedation or conscious/moderate sedation shall complete four hours every two years of approved continuing education directly related to administration and monitoring of such anesthesia or sedation as part of the hours required for licensure renewal.'

18VAC60-25-190 Requirements for Continuing Education, states 'A dental hygienist who monitors patients under general anesthesia, deep sedation or conscious/moderate sedation shall complete four hours every two years of approved continuing education directly related to the monitoring of such anesthesia or sedation as part of the hours required for licensure renewal.'

Pharmacology of commonly used oral sedatives
Techniques of oral sedation
Pros and cons of various medicines
Comprehensive review of patient evaluation systems and vital signs
Medical considerations for conscious sedation
Monitor functions and standard of care

Educational Objectives:
At the end of this course, the participant will have a renewed understanding of the many elements of the safe administration of enteral (oral) conscious sedation including:

  • Spectrum of sedation and the limits of enteral sedation.
  • Patient evaluation and appropriate patient selection with an emphasis on recognizing patients at high risk of complications.
  • Appropriate use, limitations of and interpretation of monitors.
  • Management of urgencies and emergencies especially as they pertain to conscious sedation.
  • Rules and Regulations of the Virginia State Board of Dentistry on the administration of enteral conscious sedation.
  • Pharmacology of sedative agents including drug interactions and appropriate selection for patients with differing medical conditions.

ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Shravan Renapurkar, BDS, DMD is an Assistant Professor in Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry.

Dr. Renapurkar earned his Doctor in Dental Medicine (D.M.D) degree at Boston University. Prior to this he completed a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree at Government Dental College and Hospital, Hyderabad, India. He continued his education at University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, where he completed his residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Prior to joining VCU as a full time faculty in 2015, Dr. Renapurkar pursued a one-year fellowship in Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA.

Dr. Renapurkar has published several peer reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as lectured at local study clubs, state and national professional meetings. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

He is not only involved in undergraduate and graduate OMFS education but has been an active speaker at VCU School of Dentistry continuing education courses for the past 3 years including the Oral Conscious Sedation renewal course.

Cancellations and Refunds

The Office of Continuing Education reserves the right to end registration when the enrollment limit is reached and to cancel, modify or alter content, faculty or location for any course if circumstances indicate such a change is advisable. If the Office of Continuing Education finds it necessary to cancel a course, a full refund will be issued. No travel expenses will be refunded to the registrant in the event of course cancellation or cancellation of any registration.

Full registration refunds are issued if the registrant cancels in writing two weeks prior to a course. Cancellations processed during the two weeks prior to course date will be refunded registration minus a late cancellation fee of $75. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received three days prior to the day of the course or in the event of a no-show. Select courses may have individually specific cancellation fees and polices. These policies will be listed in the print materials (brochures, fliers, etc.) and on the individual course Web page.

A $50 fee will be assessed for all returned payments. Returned payments include returned checks and dishonored credit or debit card payments.
