Come develop a deeper understanding of inclusive excellence and why it is central not only to how we prepare students to lead, but also to how we engage all members of our USC community. Learn about the ways in which the Office of Diversity and Inclusion seeks to operationalize inclusive excellence, as well as how we intend to use our equity and inclusion strategy to track the University's effectiveness in four primary areas: compositional diversity, achievement, engagement and inclusion.

This workshop is an elective workshop for the Teaching Towards Inclusive Excellence (TTIE) certificate of completion. In order to qualify for the certificate of completion, participants must attend the Inclusive Excellence at USC workshop and seven (7) electives. Participants will have 3 academic semesters (not including summer semester) to complete the Teaching Towards Inclusive Excellence (TTIE) certificate of completion.

Michelle Bryan
Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
College of Education

Michelle L. Bryan is Associate Professor of Educational Foundations and Inquiry and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the College of Education. Bryan earned her Ph.D. in Culture, Curriculum, and Change at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A sociologist of education and qualitative methodologist by training, her research focuses on issues in the field that illuminate the complex intersections of race, culture, class, gender, sexuality, and other socio-demographic factors within educational settings, as well as within educational program evaluation. Bryan teaches introductory and advanced qualitative research methods courses, as well as Foundations of Education courses that specifically explore the role of race and racism in educational settings. She has been an invited speaker and trainer at both national and international gatherings of education scholars and evaluators. Currently, she is co-chair of USC’s Council of Academic Diversity Officers.



Tracey Weldon-Stewart
Associate Dean for Diversity, Interdisciplinary Programs, and Social Sciences
College of Arts and Sciences

Tracey Weldon-Stewart is an Associate Professor in the English Department and the Linguistics Program at USC. She currently serves as Associate Dean for Diversity, Interdisciplinary Programs, and Social Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences and co-chairs the Council of Academic Diversity Officers (CADO). Weldon earned her PhD in Linguistics at The Ohio State University. As a quantitative sociolinguist, she specializes in American dialects, with a particular focus on Gullah and African American English. She teaches both graduate and undergraduate classes in Linguistics, including African American English, Language and Gender, Survey of Linguistics, and Varieties of American English. Weldon is currently completing a book, under contract with Cambridge University Press, on the use of African American English by middle class speakers. She is also an Associate Producer of an NSF funded documentary called “Talking Black in America,” which was released in 2017 by the Language & Life Project at North Carolina State University.
