At the University of South Carolina, we believe the number one job of a supervisor is to make their employees successful. The opening course of the LEAD program covers two important topics: 1) The USC supervisory philosophy and the essential models of supervision covered in LEAD; and 2) How to create effective, well-written position descriptions.
The USC supervisory philosophy provides a foundation for supervisors as they learn how to develop a flexible leadership style, set expectations, coach employees, confront difficult situations, and diagnose and address performance and behavior issues. In addition, participants will be introduced to four key management and performance models that provide a framework for successful supervision.
Course participants will also learn how to write effective position descriptions, an essential skill for all supervisors. A position description is the foundational document for employment classification, creating job announcements, and the setting of performance expectations using the EPMS Planning Stage. Inaccurate or vague position descriptions can result in several avoidable and time-consuming problems later in the employment process.
This is the required pre-requisite LEAD course.
Who Should Participate?
LEAD courses are required for University supervisors of staff, per HR Policy 1.51, and for HR Contacts. Non-Supervisors will automatically be removed from the course.
Nicole Vaughn is the Professional Development Manager of the Department of Organizational and Professional Development.
Ciji Tolbert is the Director of the Department of Classification and Compensation.
There is no charge to participate in this course. Employees should cancel their registration if they are unable to participate. Participants leaving early will not receive credit for participating. If there is an emergency, please notify the instructors.
