This roundtable includes practitioners of integrative and experiential learning from three different disciplines at UofSC. The presenters demonstrate how their students put theory into practice by applying what they learned in the classroom to their experiences outside of the classroom and reflecting on the broad range of skills they used, which ultimately prepares them for additional learning experiences within and outside the classroom as well as their future professions.

Myriam Torres explains how students enrolled in an epidemiology course in San José, Costa Rica discuss new concepts in class and then visit health care settings (a nursing home, an HIV shelter, and healthcare providers) to apply what they have learned. Stephanie Milling describes how students in dance education gain hands-on experience by shadowing dance educators in K-12 teaching environments, participating in arts advocacy at the state house and the national capitol, and teaching integrated dance to adults with disabilities. Elise Lewis discusses the process of having her undergraduate information science students prepare research poster presentations and how this assignment has provided her students with more confidence in their studies and has helped them to hone their presentation skills.

Presenters will also answer questions from the audience about ideas for integrative and experiential learning projects as well as discuss what they have learned through the development of their projects.


This workshop counts as an elective toward the Integrative and Experiential Learning Certificate.

Charles Pierce
Associate Professor
Civil and Environmental Engineering


Charlie Pierce has been teaching at the University of South Carolina since 1998. He is a USC Connect Faculty Fellow for Integrative Learning and the Director for Diversity and Inclusion in his home department of civil and environmental engineering. He also serves as the campus representative and a division director for the American Society for Engineering Education. Pierce has spent the past decade creating student-centered learning environments in engineering through the adaptation and blending of pedagogical strategies. His interests include collaborative, problem-based learning to facilitate student development of transferable skills, such as critical thinking and decision making. He is a proud graduate of the University of New Hampshire (B.S.) and Northwestern University (M.S. and Ph.D.).



Elise C. Lewis
Instructor
School of Library and Information Science


Elise Lewis teaches in a variety of areas including information literacy, technology, cultural institutions, and foundations of the library and information science field. She teaches courses to undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students in the School of Library and Information Science.  Regardless of the topic, delivery format, or content she strives to provide an interactive experience that betters students understanding of their community. She also aims to make sure the students leave the classroom with a skillset required to be a life-long learner, and have some fun in the process. Lewis' research focuses on cultural institutions, service-learning, and information literacy.



Myriam Torres
Clinical Associate Professor
Director, Consortium for Latino Immigration Studies
Epidemiology and Biostatistics
Arnold School of Public Health


Myriam Torres is currently the Director of the Consortium for Latino Immigration Studies and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the Arnold School of Public Health. For over 20 years, Torres has taught several graduate and undergraduate courses in Epidemiology in the Arnold School of Public Health and the South Carolina Honors College. She has been instrumental in the establishment of the Global USC in Costa Rica: Global Health, which has been offered as a Summer program since 2016. Since fall 2019, Torres, along with professors from Biostatistics and Environmental Health, have been teaching a 5-credit course for first-year students in the Master’s in Public Health, Quantitative Methods for Public Health Practice.



Stephanie Milling
Associate Chair and Undergraduate Director
Department of Theatre and Dance


Stephanie Milling is the Interim Department Chair and Undergraduate Director of the Department of Theatre and Dance, as well as the Interim Administrative Coordinator of the Dance Program and the Head of Dance Education. Since her performing career, Milling has taught in a wide variety of artistic and educational environments. She helped author the 2010 and 2017 South Carolina Standards for Dance Education and edited the Curriculum Support Document that accompanied the 2010 standards. She is an active arts advocate in the state and nation and received the South Carolina Dance Association’s Advocacy Award in 2012 and currently serves as the Advocacy Director for the National Dance Education Organization. Milling’s creative and scholarly work revolves around the intersections of Women’s Studies and Dance, assessment, advocacy, and pedagogy.
