When considering buzz words such as diversity, culture and multilingualism, have you ever stopped to reflect on how these terms are connected to your own life? Have you ever wondered about the students in your future classrooms and how their unique backgrounds will impact the methods you engage in teaching and learning with not only those them but their first teachers as well, their families? This presentation will delve into these concepts and leave the participants more aware of barriers, assets and ways to engage diverse children and families in education.


Participants should bring an object/picture to share that represents part of their culture.


This is an elective workshop for the Teaching Towards Inclusive Excellence (TTIE) certificate of completion.


** Registration Procedures Update **

In order for attendees to personally track their current registrations and attendance at certificate of completion workshops and events, the Center for Teaching Excellence requires that all registrants create an account in our registration system and login to register for all workshops.


If you have an existing training account with the Division of Human Resources, Office of Organizational and Professional Development, you do not need to create an account. You can login using your HR training username and password. By logging in to register for CTE events, your complete training record for both CTE and HR trainings will be available with a single account and login.

Lydia Carnesale is a third year doctoral student and Holmes scholar. She was born in Mexico and is a first generation student, is a mother of four emerging bilingual children, 2 dogs and 2 cats. Her interests and explorations revolve around understanding the dualism of language and culture of the Latino students of SC and its relationship to families and schools.
