Best Practices for Creating an Online Lecture with Closed Captioning

This session will provide an overview of best practices for creating an online lecture with closed captioning to meet course accessibility needs. The presenters will first discuss online lecture recording options on campus, including the Office of Distributed Learning’s course production studios that are available to faculty and instructors. Next, they will present best practices to create an effective and engaging lecture video. Then, the presenters will direct participants to and demonstrate the resources available for creating closed captioning for lecture and other videos to ensure the content is accessible to all students.

Trena Houp, serves as the Interim Director of the Office of Academic Programs and is the Associate Director for the Office of Distributed Learning at the University of South Carolina. The Office of Academic Programs coordinates development, revision, and termination of degree programs for the UofSC system and courses for UofSC Columbia. The Office of Distributed Learning works collaboratively with and provides support to faculty and academic units to further the growth of distributed learning (blended and online) courses and programs. Shannon Carson is the Testing Coordinator for the Office of Distributed Learning. Rocky Clark, Director of Client Development, ProctorU is an online proctoring service that allows students to take an exam from the comfort of their home anytime 24/7.

Jeffrey Soard

Jeff Soard is the Course Production Manager for the Office of Distributed Learning. He provides support to and assists faculty and academic departments as they develop blended, online and/or innovative courses. Soard provides guidance during the course development and approval process and assists faculty in recording and editing lectures or other media and creating transcripts and/or closed captioning.

Robert Grookett
Marketing, Media and Technology Manager

Rob Grookett is the Marketing, Media, and Technology Manager for the Office of Distributed Learning. Grookett is a graduate of the University of South Carolina in Media Arts. Grookett joined the Office of Distributed Learning after spending 8 years with Media Services (DoIT).
