Engaging Generation Z in the Classroom

As higher education evolves and our student body diversifies, teaching today’s undergraduate students has significantly increased in complexity. This interactive workshop will explore research and best practices in engaging and supporting “Generation Z” — students born after 1995 — in the classroom and beyond, addressing motivation, expectations, technology use and approaches to learning.



Casey Carroll
Instructional Developer, Center for Teaching Excellence

Casey Carroll is an instructional developer with the Center for Teaching Excellence at USC. Casey is responsible for working with the instructional design team to support faculty who are teaching online, producing technology-enabled course materials and assisting with quality assurance course reviews. Prior to joining CTE, Casey designed curriculum for professional training and leadership development. Casey has also taught First-Year English and English as a Second Language at the University of South Carolina. He holds a master’s degree in linguistics from USC and a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and psychology from Pacific Lutheran University.

Lydia Frass
Senior Instructional Designer, Center for Teaching Excellence

Lydia Frass is a senior instructional designer at the Center for Teaching Excellence. She works with faculty in online course design and conducts quality assurance reviews. In addition, she facilitates our Instructional Designer’s Community of Practice. Lydia earned her Ph.D. in Adult Education and Master of Public Health from The University of Southern Mississippi. Before joining CTE, she coordinated the South Carolina Public Health Training Center, which provides professional development opportunities for current and future public health practitioners.
