Prosthodontics Six-Months Preceptorship | UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry

Accepting Applications for July 2024 Enrollment
(Six-Month Program | July 2024 through December 2024)

 

The Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics offers a 'fast-tracked' preceptorship program in prosthodontics that provides additional training in fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics.  This program will enhance the preceptor's knowledge necessary for comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients dental prosthetic needs. This program is open to graduates of dental schools outside of the United States and Canada.

 

This is a full-time preceptorship consisting of didactic and clinical aspects offered by the department. Due to the demands of the full-time program, outside activities that can interfere with the program are not permitted.

 

The goals of the six-months preceptorship are to:

 

1. Enable each participant to adequately diagnose edentulous, partial edentulous, and dentate patients requiring prosthodontic therapy

 

 

2. Enable each participant to successfully plan and sequence appropriate treatment. 

 

 


About the Program

Program participants are expected to obtain advanced knowledge in the following areas:


  • Diagnosis and treatment planning of edentulous, partial edentulous and dentate patients requiring prosthodontic therapy
  • Principles of occlusion
  • Dental laboratory procedures and considerations
  • Digital dentistry
  • Implant treatment planning and restoration
  • Classic and current evidence review.


Clinical practice will be limited to observation and chair-side assistance with prosthodontic cases. Preceptors will get excellent opportunity to observe and learn variety of procedures as well as treatment philosophies from experienced prosthodontists. In addition, preceptors will also participate in multi-disciplinary case discussions and presentations.

 


PRECEPTORSHIP SCHEDULE (Didactic/Clinical):


Summer Semester


  • Graduate prosthodontic study club
  • Observe and chair-side assist in the graduate prosthodontics clinic


Fall Semester:


  • Clinical Prosthodontics (Lecture and Laboratory)
  • Indirect Single Unit Restoration (Lecture and Laboratory)
  • Advanced Restorative and Esthetics (Lecture and Laboratory)
  • Removable Prosthodontics I (Lecture and Laboratory)
  • Introduction to Implant Prosthodontics
  • Graduate prosthodontics study club
  • Case Presentations
  • Classic Literature Review
  • Observe and chair-side assist in the graduate prosthodontics clinic with crowns, removable partial dentures and implant placement.


 

 


Program Fees

Total Estimated Program Cost: $45,000

Professional Liability Insurance
Student Health Services

 

As the preceptorship is a non-accredited program, UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry cannot provide financial assistance toward tuition and fees.

 

Acceptance into the program does not allow for refunds of any tuition and fees. Failure to make program payments in full will result in dismissal from the program.

 


Required Documentation

Applicants are required to submit the following documentation along with the completed application:

 

  • Resumé or C.V. (in English, listing academic history, certifications, licensures, employment, and training experience)

 

  • Official copy of your dental school diploma (with English translations, if applicable)

 

 

  • Two letters of recommendation from dental professionals

 

  • A copy of your TOEFL or IELTS scores (required for non-U.S. Citizens/Non-Permanent Residents)

 

  • A copy of your Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) score (Not required for Periodontics and Prosthodontics preceptorships)

 

  • Health records completed by a health care provider (with English translations, if applicable):

 

  • A copy of your current CPR certification (front and back of card)

 

  • A copy of photo identification:
    • For U.S. Citizens: Copy of your federal or state-issued photo identification
    • For U.S. Permanent Residents: Copy of your Permanent Resident Card
    • For Non-U.S. Citizens/Permanent Residents: Copy of your passport identification page, visa stamp and I-94 (if applicable)

Application Fees and Deadlines

Application Fee:

  • U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident: $500.00
  • Non-U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident: $750.00

  • Application fee is non-refundable and non-transferable
  • Payment is required to begin processing your application
  • Payments will be collected online (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX)
  • If you wish to pay by check or money order, please make payable to UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, PACE Center, and include with your mailed application.

 

Application deadline for January 2024 entry: August 1, 2023

 

Late applications will be accepted until August 31, 2023 with a $250 late fee.


Disclaimers

Our preceptorships are not required for dentists (U.S. and/or internationally-trained) to apply for UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry Advanced Education programs.


Acceptance into a UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry preceptorship does not guarantee acceptance into any of our Advanced Education programs. Interested individuals must apply through standard procedures.


Our dental preceptorships do not award academic credit. Participants will receive a letter of completion upon completing the program.

For inquires regarding licensure in Texas, visit the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners website. Information about licensure in other states is available from the ADA website under 'licensures.


Non-U.S. Citizen Information

If you are a Non-U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident applicant, we will work with our Office of International Affairs to assist with the appropriate documentation needed for you to enter the U.S. to participate in the program.

 

The process can take between 8 - 12 weeks and must be completed before you enter the U.S. Please be aware that the Office of International Affairs will require you to submit documents of financial support in order to process a visa.
