Preceptors are expected to attend all of the classes the residents are assigned to during the six months of the preceptorship, and can expect to obtain knowledge in comprehensive care dentistry and interdisciplinary treatment planning.

PRECEPTORSHIP SCHEDULE:

Didactic

• Oral Biomaterials II
• Treatment planning and literature review
• Perio-Restorative seminar
• Several hands-on courses

Clinical and Laboratory:

• Observe and chairside assist in the AEGD residency program (clinical treatments or laboratory procedures)

• Comprehensive examination on patients

• Requires a passing grade of 70 in manikin/typodont preparations for crowns/inlays/onlays and class II composite fillings for the preceptor to be assigned clinical cases.

• Diagnosis and treatment planning presentation with AEGD residents and director

• After first being assigned simple cases to work up and possibly complete, preceptors will be expected to work up and present their assigned patient cases to the treatment-planning board to be approved prior to starting any dental procedure.

• Treatment planning presentation to patients

• Requires acceptance of treatment plan by patients.

• Perform comprehensive treatment on patients

• The preceptor may qualify for delivery of actual patient care, only if the program director deems appropriate after evaluation of the preceptor.

• Clinical case assignment(s) are contingent on the individual's didactic progress and clinical/practical skill exam(s). The preceptor will team up with another preceptor to perform clinical treatment, assisting each other unless a dental assistant is available.

• Due to the length of time participated, the preceptor may be expected to be assigned at least 5 patient cases once a passing grade of 70 in manikin/typodont preparations is achieved. These patients may have already been assigned to other residents or previous preceptors. On a case-by-case basis, the preceptor may be required to share their patients with residents who will perform more complex procedures when the program director deems appropriate.

• The program director has the right to stop the preceptor from any clinical treatment at any time if they feel the preceptor cannot perform clinical treatment up to the standard of care and may pose an adverse treatment outcome for the patient.

The following sample clinical procedures will not be part of the direct patient care:

• Osseous surgery
• Surgical implant placement
• Soft tissue grafting
• Guided bone regeneration or ridge augmentation
• Surgical extractions
• Removal of impacted tooth
• Orthodontic treatment
• Esthetic veneer(s), crown(s) and fixed partial denture(s)
• Full mouth or single arch rehabilitation
• Implant restoration
• Premolar and Molar Endodontics
• Endodontic retreatment
• Any other treatments deemed too complex for the preceptor

As the preceptorship is a non-accredited program, UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry cannot provide financial assistance toward tuition and fees.

Acceptance into the program does not allow for refunds of any tuition and fees. Failure to make program payments in full will result in dismissal from the program.

Applicants are required to submit the following documentation along with the completed application:

• Resumé or C.V. (in English, listing academic history, certifications, licensures, employment, and training experience)

• Official copy of your dental school diploma (with English translations, if applicable)

• An ECE Course by Course Evaluation Report of your transcript from your dental school if it was outside the U.S.

• Two letters of recommendation from dental professionals

• A copy of your TOEFL or IELTS scores (required for non-U.S. Citizens/Permanent Residents)

• A copy of your Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) score (Not required for Periodontics and Prosthodontics preceptorships)

• Health records completed by a health care provider (with English translations, if applicable):
  • A UTHealth Houston Immunization form (attach any lab work to show proof of immunizations if necessary)
  • A letter from a physician stating you are in general good health

• A copy of your current CPR certification (front and back of card)

• A copy of photo identification:
  
  • For U.S. Citizens: Copy of your federal or state-issued photo identification
  • For U.S. Permanent Residents: Copy of your Permanent Resident Card
  • For Non-U.S. Citizens/Permanent Residents: Copy of your passport identification page, visa stamp and I-94 (if applicable)
