Course Description

This course is designed to give dental professionals, registered nurses and nurse practitioners the most current information on oral health, oral care, and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The course will contain advanced information directed toward practitioners anticipating care and treatment of the HIV patient.

At the completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the current HIV epidemiology, Department of Health and Human Services guidelines for HIV screening and testing
  • Describe the principles of referral of HIV patients

  • Discuss special considerations for dental treatment and oral surgery for the HIV/ AIDS patient

  • Identify HIV etiology and pathogenesis

  • Describe the guidelines for post-exposure prophylaxis

About the Presenter(s)

Christine S. Brennan, PhD, RN, NC-BC, has been involved in HIV care for over 25 years as a clinician, educator and policy maker.  Clinically she has provided care to all ages, genders and sub populations of PLWHA and those at risk. As a nurse practitioner she is currently  providing care to HIV + and at risk persons practicing at two sites in Southern Louisiana, one RWHAP Primary Care Community based clinic and the other an Infection disease specialty practice.  Through the last 25 years she has also be active with the AETC, as a clinical educator, faculty member, Medical Director and now as Director of the Louisiana AETC, part of the SCAETC.  With a PhD in Policy, Dr. Brennan has worked with numerous entities in the development implementation and evaluation of various policies that effect PLWHA and those at risk, at the community, state and national levels.  She is well published in the field and have presented on the entire spectrum of HIV care and prevention (and if she hasn’t she is willing to). As faculty at LSU School of Public Health (SPH) and School of Nursing she teaches graduate students within the realm of health policy, law and clinical care.  Also through the SPH she has been involved with various research endeavors focusing on the issues of PLWHA and those at risk specifically, barriers to care, systems to delivery of care and means to monitor effectiveness of care.



Mark Nichols, DDS , is currently Dental Director Avenue 360, Dental Director SCAETC and an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of General Practice Public Health at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.
