Controlled Substances and Texas Dentists: Approved Procedures for Prescribing and Monitoring While Safely and Effectively Managing Pain and Anxiety

Beginning on September 1, 2020, the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners has implemented new continuing education requirements for dentists authorized to prescribe controlled substances (Rule 111.1 (b).  This course meets the requirement for 2 hours of continuing education related to prescribing and monitoring controlled substances, with an emphasis on scientific guidance for the safe and effective management of acute postoperative pain. 



Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand current TSBDE and DEA requirements for Texas dentists who prescribe controlled substances
  • Comply with the Texas Prescription Monitoring Program and use the controlled substance database appropriately
  • Recognize and prevent the abuse and diversion of controlled substances in dentistry
  • Select opioid and non-opioid analgesics for the effective and safe management of acute post-operative dental pain based on scientific evidence.

About Our Speaker


Arthur H. Jeske, DMD, PhDis the associate dean for strategic planning and a professor in the Department of General Dentistry and Dental Public Health at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. He earned his PhD in pharmacology and DMD from the Medical College of Georgia. He is a member of the American Dental Association (ADA), Texas Dental Association, and Greater Houston Dental Society and is a fellow of the International College of Dentistry and the American College of Dentistry. Dr. Jeske chaired the ADA's Council on Scientific Affairs in 2004 and has authored numerous articles on the use of drugs in dentistry. He is currently editor-in-chief of Mosby's Dental Drug Reference and an editor of Contemporary Dental Pharmacology.
