Accepting Applications for July 2023 Enrollment
(Twelve-Month Program | July 2023 through June 2024)
The Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene offers a preceptorship program in Periodontics that provides additional training in the specialty area of Periodontology and surgical implantology. This program will enhance the preceptor's knowledge necessary for comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients with periodontal diseases and implant needs. This program is open to graduates of dental schools outside of the United States and Canada.
This is a full-time preceptorship consisting of didactic and clinical aspects offered by the department. Due to the demands of the full-time program, outside activities that can interfere with the program are not permitted.
Program participants are expected to obtain advanced knowledge in the following areas:

Didactic:
Summer Semester
Fall Semester:
*Requires passing grade of 70% in the Periodontics I: Diagnosis and Treatment Planning and II: Nonsurgical Periodontal Therapy course (mid-term and final) for the preceptor to be assigned clinical cases of nonsurgical treatment on a patient.
Spring Semester:
*Requires passing grade of 70% in the Periodontics III: Surgical Periodontal Therapy course (mid-term and final) for the preceptor to be assigned clinical case(s) of surgical treatment on a patient.
Clinical:
Fall Semester:
*Requires passing grade of 70% in the Periodontics I: Diagnosis and Treatment Planning course (mid-term and final) for the preceptor to observe or assist with patients in the clinic.
**Requires passing grade of 70% in the Periodontics II: Nonsurgical Periodontal Therapy course (mid-term and final) for the preceptor to be assigned clinical case(s) of non-surgical treatment in the clinic.
Spring Semester:
*Requires passing grade of 70% in the Periodontics III: Surgical Periodontal Therapy course (mid-term and final) for the preceptor to be assigned clinical case(s) of surgical treatment on a patient.
Preceptor clinical case assignment(s) are contingent on the individual's didactic progress and clinical/practical skill exam(s).
The following clinical procedures will not be part of the direct patient care:

As the preceptorship is a non-accredited program, UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry cannot provide financial assistance toward tuition and fees.
Acceptance into the program does not allow for refunds of any tuition and fees. Failure to make program payments in full will result in dismissal from the program.

Late applications will be accepted until November 30, 2022 with a $250 late fee.
Our preceptorships are not required for dentists (U.S. and/or internationally-trained) to apply for UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry Advanced Education programs.
Acceptance into a UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry preceptorship does not guarantee acceptance into any of our Advanced Education programs. Interested individuals must apply through standard procedures.
Our dental preceptorships do not award academic credit. Participants will receive a letter of completion upon completing the program.

If you are a Non-U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident applicant, we will work with our Office of International Affairs to assist with the appropriate documentation needed for you to enter the U.S. to participate in the program.
The process can take between 8 - 12 weeks and must be completed before you enter the U.S. Please be aware that the Office of International Affairs will require you to submit documents of financial support in order to process a visa.
