UTHealth School of Dentistry | PACE Center Accepting Applications for July 2024 Enrollment
(Twelve-Month Program | July 2024 through June 2025)
This preceptorship offers additional training in the specialty area of Pediatric Dentistry. The program will enhance the preceptor's knowledge for comprehensive evaluation and treatment of infants, adolescents and children including patients with special health care needs. This program is also open to graduates of dental schools outside of the United States and Canada.
This is a full-time preceptorship consisting of didactic, clinical and research aspects offered by the department. Due to the demands of the full-time program, outside activities that can interfere with the program are not permitted.
Program participants can expect to obtain advanced knowledge in the following areas:
- Diagnosis and treatment in pediatric dentistry, pathology and other related conditions
- Sedation and hospital dentistry - didactic and clinical observation including patient management in an operating room (OR) environment
- Pediatric dentistry and related systemic illnesses
- Basic and advanced clinical procedures – didactic and clinical observation
- Mild to moderate sedation (parenteral and oral drug therapy) - didactic and clinical observation
- Participation in didactic courses exclusively related to recent advanced techniques
- Interdisciplinary treatment planning with endodontics, oral surgery and other medical specialties as necessary
- Hands-on application of imaging/orthodontic cephalometric analysis software
- Clinical and/or laboratory research in pediatric dentistry as available according to knowledge base of the preceptor
- Didactic and clinical activities are available to preceptors according to skill and knowledge level.

Clinical:
Summer | Fall Semester:
- Observe and assist in the graduate pediatric dentistry clinic*
- Comprehensive pediatric dentistry examination on patients
- Competency for examination and treatment planning
*Requires passing grade of 70% for the preceptor to observe or assist with patients in the clinic (Starting January).
Spring Semester:
- All of the above
- Pediatric Dentistry Clinic I
- Assist with teaching pre-doctoral clinical courses
Preceptor clinical case assignment(s) are contingent on the individual's didactic progress and clinical/practical skill exam(s).
The following clinical procedures will not be part of the direct patient care:
- Care of the patient in the operating room
- Sedation of patients
- Advanced surgical procedures
Research (optional):
- Develop independent research project in the areas of pediatric dentistry under the guidance of a research mentor
- Participate in the departmental research studies
- Manuscript submission for publication.

As the preceptorship is a non-accredited program, UTHealth School of Dentistry at Houston cannot provide financial assistance toward tuition and fees.
Your acceptance into the program does not allow for refunds of any tuition and fees. Failure to make program payments in full will result in dismissal from the program.
Applicants are required to submit the following documentation along with the completed application:
- Resumé or C.V. (in English, listing academic history, certifications, licensures, employment, and training experience)
- Official copy of your dental school diploma (with English translations, if applicable)
- An ECE Course by Course Evaluation Report of your transcript from your dental school if it was outside the U.S.
- Two letters of recommendation from dental professionals
- A copy of your Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) score (Not required for Periodontics and Prosthodontics preceptorships)
- Health records completed by a health care provider (with English translations, if applicable):
- A UTHealth Houston Immunization form (attach any lab work to show proof of immunizations if necessary)
- A letter from a physician stating you are in general good health
- A copy of your current CPR certification (front and back of card)
- A copy of photo identification:
- For U.S. Citizens: Copy of your federal or state-issued photo identification
- For U.S. Permanent Residents: Copy of your Permanent Resident Card
- For Non-U.S. Citizens/Permanent Residents: Copy of your passport identification page, visa stamp and I-94 (if applicable)

U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident: $500.00
Non-U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident: $750.00

- If you wish to pay by check or money order, please make payable to UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, PACE Center, and include with your mailed application.
Application deadline for July 2024 entry: November 1, 2023
Late applications will be accepted until November 30, 2023 with a $250 late fee.
Face-to-face and/or virtual interviews are part of the application process. Individuals should arrange to attend the scheduled interview if selected.
Our preceptorships are not required for dentists (U.S. and/or internationally-trained) to apply for UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry Advanced Education programs.
Acceptance into a UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry preceptorship does not guarantee acceptance into any of our Advanced Education programs. Interested individuals must apply through standard procedures.
Our dental preceptorships do not award academic credit. Participants will receive a letter of completion upon completing the program.

If you are a Non-U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident applicant, we will work with our Office of International Affairs to assist with the appropriate documentation needed to for you to enter the U.S. to participate in the program.
The process can take between 8 - 12 weeks and must be completed before you enter the U.S. Please be aware that the Office of International Affairs will require you to submit documents of financial support in order to process a visa.
