This full-day PD event will cover the 11 Best Practice Considerations for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) as required by Federal and State law.

  1. Extended Educational Programming;
  2. Daily Scheduled Reflecting Minimal Unstructured Time and Active Engagement in Learning Activities;
  3. In-Home and Community-Based Training or Viable Alternatives that Assist the Student with Acquisition of Social/Behavioral Skills;
  4. Positive Behavior Support Strategies;
  5. Futures Planning (beginning at any age);
  6. Parent/Family Training and Support;
  7. Staff-to-Student Ratio;
  8. Communication Interventions;
  9. Social Skills Supports;
  10. Professional Educator/Staff Support;
  11. Teaching Strategies based on peer-reviewed and/or research-based practices.

Participants will review these guidance principals with access to hardcopy and online resources available through the NMPED and elsewhere as well as examples of how these elements can be implemented into the day-to-day systemic functions in classrooms.
