Spalding MFA Community Workshop



Nationally bestselling author Silas House is set to lead a community workshop for creative writers this fall, offered through Spalding University's low-residency MFA in Writing program. The four-day, non-credit writing workshop takes place Wednesday, November 14, through Saturday, November 17, during the MFA program's fall residency on Spalding's campus in downtown Louisville. Community workshop students are invited to attend MFA residency events, including lectures and panel discussions normally reserved exclusively for MFA students.



Important dates are as follows:


September 17: Early-bird deadline to complete application form and submit a writing sample as described below.


September 24: Final deadline to complete application form and submit writing sample. For the writing sample, email a 5-7 page, double-spaced writing sample in prose (fiction, creative nonfiction, or writing for children and young adults), or 4 poems, to Include your name and “Community Workshop” in the subject line.


October 1: Applicants will be notified of decisions on acceptance.


October 8 (two deadlines):


  • Deadline for accepted students to email a Worksheet of 12-18 pages of double-spaced prose, or 5 poems, to Include your name and “Community Workshop” in the subject line.

  • Payment due. A link for payment will be sent in the acceptance email. The cost for the Community Workshop is $650, or $550 for accepted applications that are received before September 17.


October 22: A Workshop Booklet containing all participants' Worksheets will be emailed out to students. Students read and write feedback on the Worksheets before coming to the Community Workshop.


November 14-17: The Community Workshop meets at Spalding, 2:40-5:15 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 9:00-10:15 a.m. Saturday. The workshop is limited to 9 students.
