About the Course
The Environmental Health & Safety Academy is a unique week-long course designed to provide you with the general skills needed to identify, evaluate and control workplace hazards, particularly those found in academic settings. This is the twenty third time the course has been offered! New practical, hands-on activities will take place this year!


Who Should Attend  
The course is developed especially for health and safety professionals, particularly individuals charged with maintaining the health and safety of their faculty, staff, students, and visitors.  This course is helpful to anyone new to the health and safety field regardless of the industry. Experienced health and safety professionals new to the academic or government sector will find this course incredibly helpful.

Employer Based Group Discounts

The Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health is pleased to announce group registration discounts for the Environmental Health & Safety Academy! These discounts are available regardless of whether your employer will be paying for the program, or each employee will paying individually.


Please send one email from your institution with a list of full names and work-related email addresses of each employee that will be attending this course to swcoeh.ce@uth.tmc.edu. A SWCOEH CE team member will reply with the discount code to apply at the time of registration.

If you need to set up UTHealth as a Vendor for your institution do also let us know at this time.

Course Objectives
At the end of EH&S Academy training course, participants will be able to:

•Outline how universities and research organizations function, including their basic characteristics.
•Summarize the basic knowledge and procedures associated with risk management and insurance, fire and life safety, radiation, chemical and biological safety and environmental protection programs.

•Develop key performance measures and metrics customized for their own safety program.
•Design and deliver the most appropriate strategies of presenting performance measures and metrics to key constituencies, including upper management and regulatory officials.
•Identify the most common safety compliance challenges encountered in practice.
•Choose the most appropriate strategies to prevent safety problems.
•Implement the following safety programs: risk management & insurance, fire & life safety, radiation, chemical and biological safety, and environmental protection programs.
•Choose the most appropriate strategies to maintain a safe work environment.

The UT System is sponsoring a limited number of scholarships for this program.

Applicants must be a full-time employee of the University of Texas System with main work responsibilities in the areas of Environmental Health & Safety and/or Risk Management.

Please do not register for the course until you receive the email communication confirming your acceptance and offering a discount code. A discount code will be emailed to you on acceptance for you to use at the time of registration.

Applicants must pass screening through UT System Office of Risk Management and cannot have taken this course previously, or must show need to re-take course. SWCOEH does not make any decisions on applicant status. Please contact us at swcoeh.ce@uth.tmc.edu if you have any questions. Your registration is not complete until you receive a confirmation email from SWCOEH staff.

Visitors, please be prepared to pay at the parking machines by cash or credit card upon leaving the visitor parking areas. Parking vouchers will be provided to program agenda producers and guest speakers in exchange for their service to SWCOEH CE program events. We thank you for your continued support and attendance.

OCB Building Logistics - Wayfinding to Rio Grande Room 2.200 (2nd floor)

UTHealth SWCOEH event visitors, please bring a current form of legal identification to sign-in with security at reception. UTHealth employees and students should wear UTHealth badge.

Enter at the front of the building that is facing Crosspoint Avenue. After leaving the security reception area, walk left down hallway, walk left to elevator, and take elevator to 2nd floor. Exit elevator and the Rio Grande Room is to the left around the corner, Room 2.200. Please sign-in at the event check-in desk to confirm attendance.

Registration pricing, full tuition payment is due before first day of class. Payment must be received by 12:00pm CST on Friday, September 20, 2019. Payment by credit card (online) is strongly encouraged for timely processing.

The Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) supports research, education and outreach in occupational and environmental health. The SWCOEH is housed within the Department of Epidemiology, Human Genetics and Environmental Sciences of the UTHealth School of Public Health and is under the leadership of Elaine Symanski, PhD who serves as Director.

The SWCOEH was established in 1977 as a NIOSH-funded Education and Research Center (ERC), now one of 18 ERCs in the nation. In 1985, the SWCOEH became a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Occupational Health.


The mission of the SWCOEH Continuing Education (CE) Program is to serve as a training resource for professionals and decision-makers in the occupational and environmental health fields by delivering specialized courses in response to current training needs. Our ultimate goal is to improve occupational and environmental health. Our core subject areas are occupational medicine, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, hazardous substances and materials and occupational health nursing.
