Pharmacology Review - Most Prescribed Medications Your Patients are Taking

Having an understanding of the medications taken by patients is essential for the dental team to provide the best care possible to their dental patients. Dr. Sims will review the importance of and strategies for taking useful medical and medication histories. Learning how to ask the right questions in the right way will provide helpful information to the dental team.

Dr. Sims will provide a review of the Top Prescribed Medications. For the dentist and staff to safely and optimally provide dental care and treatment for patients, an understanding of the pharmacology of these drugs is important. Drug effects and side effects which alter the oral health of the patient, as well as the effects which impact dental treatment and prescribing will be highlighted. In addition, Dr. Sims will provide a review of drug interactions that occur between these medications and dental treatment and/or medications. Helpful take-home charts and summaries will be provided to the participants.

Participants will:

- Be familiar with the medications most commonly taken by patients.

- Understand the impact of those medications on dental treatment of patients.

- Understand strategies for providing safe dental care for patients taking common medications.


Pamela J. Sims, Pharm.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Sims earned her B.S. Pharmacy from the University of Florida, her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Mercer University and her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Dr. Sims recently retired as Professor of Pharmacokinetics in the Department of Pharmaceutical, Social and Administrative Sciences at Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy (SUMSOP) where she also coordinated and lectured in pharmacology courses for the Nurse Anesthesia, Nurse Practitioner and Physical Therapy programs.

Prior to Samford, she served on the faculty of Idaho State University.

Dr. Sims holds a faculty appointment in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry Department of Pediatrics where she provides lectures in Pharmacology to the Post-doctoral Dental Residents and has provided courses to the residents and the Part II Board Review in Pharmacology to D4 students as well as lectures to D3 and D4 students.

Dr. Sims publishes and lectures nationally and internationally concerning topics on Dental Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Clinical Pharmacology and Pedagogy.
