Can dental caries be successfully treated without cutting a tooth? Is there evidence to support the use of fluorides, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) or amorphous calcium phosphate? In 2018, the ADA published evidence based guidance and recommendations for non-surgical dental care. In this course, we will explore these recommendations. Silver solutions have provided dentists with tools to pharmacologically arrest dental caries. We will also review effective and evidence based protocols for using SDF and introduce Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Techniques (SMART) restorations. Together, these techniques provide additional treatment options for dentists to prevent progression of caries in their patients and to provide treatment for patients whose fragility, challenging behaviors or life circumstances prevent traditional definitive dental care.
Objectives: After completing this course, learners should be able to:
- Appropriately use indirect pulp therapy to preserve pulp chamber integrity
- Identify evidence based medicaments that have the highest success rate when performing primary therapeutic pulpotomies
- Perform primary pulp therapy for pediatric patients
Educational Methods: Lecture, PowerPoint Presentation
