This hands-on course is designed to offer clinicians with comprehensive information related to fixed implant provisional restorations. The lecture portion will discuss patient evaluation, treatment planning, and step-by-step fabrication of various types of provisional restorations during different stages of implant therapy. The hands-on exercises will include making a wire reinforced resin-bonded pontic and a screw-retained implant temporary crown on a technical cast.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. understand the temporary options during implant treatment to improve functional success and to optimize implant esthetics
2. fabricate screw-retained single implant provisional crown
3. fabricate resin-bonded provisional restoration

Other important information for participants:
1. This program is designed for dentists only. It is not suitable for office staff.
2. Class size is limited to 10 participants.
3. Implant screw drivers, a screw-retained temporary abutment and a practice model will be provided.
4. Participants must bring their own:
a. High and low speed (straight and contra angle) 4-hole Midwest type handpieces
b. Acrylic burs (e.g., Brasseler E cutters)
d. Curved Hemostat (Kelly - 5.5')
e. #34 Bird Beak plier
f. Personal dental magnifier glasses or optical loupes
Dr. Perng-Ru Liu is a 1985 graduate of Chung-Shan Medical University, Taiwan. He received his Prosthodontic Certificate (1991), MS Degree (1992) and DMD Degree (1999) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry. Currently, he is Professor and Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs at UAB School of Dentistry where he also served as Chair of the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry (2000 to 2009), Chair of the Department of Prosthodontics (2009 to 2012) and Chair of the Department of Restorative Sciences (2012-2019). In September, 2014, he was named the inaugural holder of the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting Endowed Professorship in Comprehensive Dentistry.
Dr. Liu has been very actively involved in several grant supported clinical dental implant research projects at the UAB School of Dentistry. His research interests have been focused on clinical research of the restorative phases of several dental implant systems and in·vivo evaluations of the various esthetic restorative systems. Dr. Liu is a member of the American Dental Association, the International Association for Dental Research, the American College of Prosthodontists and Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Honorary Dental Fraternity. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Liu has published numerous scientific abstracts and articles in refereed journals. He has also lectured nationally and internationally on computer generated ceramic restorations, esthetic dentistry, and implant dentistry. Dr. Liu was the recipient of the 1997 and 2005 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest university-wide honor for teaching excellence, in the School of Dentistry.
