Basic and Beyond - A Comprehensive Review and Update of Fixed Prosthodontics

Course Description:

Exciting advancements in new and improved esthetic restorative materials and CAD/CAM technologies provide the esthetic restorative dentists with an array of great tools to meet the challenges of daily dentistry. Furthermore, ceramic materials have become integral parts of esthetically driven restorative treatment concepts that include procedures ranging from conservative veneers to full-mouth rehabilitations. This course is designed to provide an update of current concepts and dental materials in fixed prosthodontics. Evidence-based research and clinical studies will be presented to substantiate the long-term clinical performance of fixed restorations. Examples of common complications and their management are presented. General practitioners who wish to fine tune their fixed prosthodontic techniques will find this program to be perfectly suited to their needs and to their busy professional schedules.

b. Clinical Applications of Zirconia and Lithium

c. Biomechanical Principles of Preparation Designs

d. Adjustment and Polish Zirconia and Lithium Disilicate Restorations

e. Zirconia Resin-Bonded Bridge

f. Anterior Esthetic Design Utilizing Ceramic Veneers

II. Cement and Cementation Techniques

III. Repair Fractured Porcelain of Long Span Restorations with Overlay Pontic and Veneer

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Be familiar with various new restorative materials available for fixed restorations.

2. Select proper technique for restoring endodontically treated teeth

3. Understand the applications and techniques for all-ceramic restorations

4. Understand correct tooth preparation design for different types of fixed restorations

5. Select proper provisional materials

6. Improve communication with the dental laboratory

7. Select proper dental cements for fixed restorations

Dr. Perng-Ru Liu is a 1985 graduate of Chung-Shan Medical University, Taiwan. He received his Prosthodontic Certificate (1991), MS Degree (1992) and DMD Degree (1999) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry. Currently, he is Professor and Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs at UAB School of Dentistry where he also served as Chair of the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry (2000 to 2009), Chair of the Department of Prosthodontics (2009 to 2012) and Chair of the Department of Restorative Sciences (2012-2019). In September, 2014, he was named the inaugural holder of the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting Endowed Professorship in Comprehensive Dentistry.

Dr. Liu has been very actively involved in several grant supported clinical dental implant research projects at the UAB School of Dentistry. His research interests have been focused on clinical research of the restorative phases of several dental implant systems and in·vivo evaluations of the various esthetic restorative systems. Dr. Liu is a member of the American Dental Association, the International Association for Dental Research, the American College of Prosthodontists and Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Honorary Dental Fraternity. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Liu has published numerous scientific abstracts and articles in refereed journals. He has also lectured nationally and internationally on computer generated ceramic restorations, esthetic dentistry, and implant dentistry. Dr. Liu was the recipient of the 1997 and 2005 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest university-wide honor for teaching excellence, in the School of Dentistry.
