Achieving Clinical Excellence in Implant Restorations – How Would You Treat These Patients

Course Description:

This patient presentation and audience participation course is designed to offer clinicians with comprehensive information related to various types of patient treatment in implantology. These include patient evaluation, treatment planning, and step-by-step restorative phase of single tooth implant, partially edentulous patients, and fully edentulous patients. The following topics will also be discussed in the patient presentation: provisionalization options during implant treatment, selection of proper implant abutments, How to control excess cement, managing common implant prosthetic errors and issues related to tooth-implant connection.

1. The Partially Edentulous Maxillary and Mandibular Patients -

a. Advanced treatment planning and sequencing utilizing surgical and prosthetic considerations

b. Provisionalization during implant treatment to improve functional success and to optimize implant esthetics

c. Prefabricated vs. custom, titanium vs. zirconia abutment - what should I use?

d. How to control the cement for cement-retained implant restorations

e. Common implant prosthetic errors and how to avoid them

f. Tooth-implant connection - what works and what doesn't work

2. The Edentulous Maxillary Patients Treated With –

a. unconnected attachment vs. connected bar overdentures

b. cement-retained implant prosthesis

c. screw-retained full-arch monolithic zirconia prosthesis

3. The Edentulous Mandibular Patients Treated With –

a. unconnected attachment vs. connected bar overdentures

b. screw-retained fixed detachable prosthesis

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. formulate treatment plans for a wide spectrum of implant patients

2. select the proper restorative technique for fixed and removable implant restorations

3. select the appropriate attachment system in a variety of clinical applications

4. manage complications and failures in implant dentistry

Perng-Ru Liu, DDS, MS, DMD

Dr. Perng-Ru Liu is a 1985 graduate of Chung-Shan Medical University, Taiwan. He received his Prosthodontic Certificate (1991), MS Degree (1992) and DMD Degree (1999) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry. Currently, he is Professor and Chair of the Department of Restorative Sciences at UAB School of Dentistry where he also served as Chair of the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry (2000 to 2009) and Chair of the Department of Prosthodontics (2009 to 2012). In September, 2014, he was named the inaugural holder of the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting Endowed Professorship in Comprehensive Dentistry.

Dr. Liu has been very actively involved in several grant supported clinical dental implant research projects at the UAB School of Dentistry. His research interests have been focused on clinical research of the restorative phases of several dental implant systems and in·vivo evaluations of the various esthetic restorative systems. Dr. Liu is a member of the American Dental Association, the International Association for Dental Research, the American College of Prosthodontists and Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Honorary Dental Fraternity. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Liu has published numerous scientific abstracts and articles in refereed journals. He has also lectured nationally and internationally on computer generated ceramic restorations, esthetic dentistry, and implant dentistry. Dr. Liu was the recipient of the 1997 and 2005 UAB President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest university-wide honor for teaching excellence, in the School of Dentistry.
