The Poetics of Painting the Landscape
Instructor: Christopher Volpe
Monday - Friday 9am – 4pm | July 10 - 14

This class combines plein-air (outdoor) painting and conceptual work done in the studio indoors. Our approach will be about introspection, improvisation, and perception as well as technique; we will explore exercises, processes, and disciplines that align the creative process with honest responses to life. The goal is to inspire strong, technically sound art expressing originality and feeling, and to nurture a creative practice fulfilling in itself yet engaged with the past and present of art and life at large.

*this course may be taken for 1.5 credits; additional fees, pre-requisites, and requirements apply. Please contact the Continuing Education Office first to confirm eligibility before registering for credit. Montserrat Students should register via campus cafe.

About Chris: Christopher Volpe works in oil paint at the border of representation and abstraction. Though rooted in landscape, his atmospheric paintings combine the traditional and the contemporary to express intangible feelings and ideas.

Christopher approaches painting with a sense of the poetic, having previously earned a graduate degree in poetry from the University of New Hampshire. He turned to painting for its immediate potential to express deeply embedded individual and universal experiences of reality.

He teaches classes and workshops at Montserrat College of Art, Castle Hill Center for the Arts in Truro, Mass. and en plein air in summer throughout NewEngland and abroad. He is a writer for Art New England, and he has taught poetry, mythology, and art history at the New Hampshire Institute of Art, Chester College of New England, and Franklin Pierce University.
