Psychological Portraiture
Instructor: Tim Harney
Monday - Friday 9am – 4pm | June 6 - 10

The focus of this workshop is on psychological portraiture. Over the first two days, working from a live model and self-portrait, we will have an opportunity to establish a solid understanding of the structure of the head and creating “likeness”.  The remainder of the workshop week will be devoted to working with the model with an emphasis on expressionist and new interpretations of the sitter that transcend conventional portraiture. The great autobiographical record left by Rembrandt, Kollwitz, Van Gogh, and Munch will be discussed as well as the rich lineage of 20th century masters who have explored a psychological portraiture:  Beckmann, Giacometti,  Kahlo, Bacon, Freud, Auerbach, Gillespie among others.  With exception of oil paint, students are welcome to explore a variety of painting & drawing media. Previous drawing or painting experience is helpful in this workshop.

*this course may be taken for 1.5 credits; additional fees, pre-requisites, and requirements apply. Please contact the Continuing Education Office first to confirm eligibility before registering for credit. Montserrat Students should register via campus cafe.
