Creative Letterpress Projects

Have you been admiring letterpress printed books, posters and cards? Been wanting to learn how to set type and print your own ideas? Come work with Montserrat’s wood and metal type collection, as well as a range of presses from the 1890’s to the 1950’s. This intensive course is great for beginners or those looking for a refresher. We’ll spend the week going over the basics of letterpress printing, planning out a project and printing an edition.

Prerequisite: none required

**this course may be taken for 1.5 credits; additional fees, pre-requisites, and requirements apply. Please contact the Continuing Education Office first to confirm eligibility before registering for credit. Montserrat Students should register via campus cafe.


About Sarah: Sarah Smith has been teaching letterpress printing, bookbinding and printmaking for ten years at Montserrat, where she helped create a letterpress printing studio and BFA concentration in Book Arts. She is a founding member of Imposition Press. Additionally, Sarah worked for 15 years as a rare book conservator at the Northeast Document Conservation Center and at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia, PA. She now works at Dartmouth College teaching letterpress and book arts.
