This is a virtual -live, instructor led version of the 4 hour Playground Safety course that is approved by the NC DCDEE.  


Participants will attend 3 hours online and complete 1 hour of assignments on their own time that are submitted to the instructors within one week following the course in order to receive the 4 CHC.  

Course Description


Young children spend many of their working hours in child care centers. Outdoor play for children encourages movement and physical activity stimulates children's learning. Children learn by exploration, so outdoor spaces must be designed in such a way that children can test their abilities in a challenging yet safe environment. Attend this learning event for the 4 hour Playground Safety course approved by the NC DCDEE and discuss rules, regulations and create an outdoor play and playground safety in accordance with 10A NCAC 09 .0605 and .1102 (e).

This is a virtual -live, instructor led version of the 4 hour Playground Safety course that is approved by the NC DCDEE.

Participants will attend 3 hours online and complete 1 hour of assignments on their own time that are submitted to the instructors within one week following the course in order to receive the 4 CHC.

Each participant will receive 4.0 CHC for attending and completing all required coursework.

Karen Darby is the Director of Learning and Development at Southwestern Child Development Commission, Inc.  Creating and delivering continuing education learning events are a part of her duties.  Karen maintains assists participants with registration, assists instructors with course creations and reviews courses for accuracy and alignment policy.  Karen is an elected member of the North Carolina Center for Afterschool Programs Board of Advisors and Karen also currently serves on the Bylaws Polcies and Procedures Commitee for IACET (the International Association for Continuing Education and Training) and PBS Teachers Advisory Group, and CLASS Advisory Panel..  She is a past member of  the Distance Education Taskforce  and  Badging Committe for IACET, to help create a distance learning resource guide to help clarify each of the IACET standards as well determine how each Continuing Education/Training standard applies in the world of distance learning.  Karen has also also served on the Program Committee of EdMedia 2017 - World Conference on Educational Media & Technology for AACE (Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education) as a reviewer of conference papers. 

Karen holds a Bachelors in Elementary Education from West Virginia University,  a Masters Degree in Liberal Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a MicroMasters degree in Instructional Design and Technology from the University of Maryland. 

She holds a Level 12 Early Educator Certificate in both the Early Care and School Age Fields  with endorsements in Professional Development, Technical Assistance, and Administration.

Before becoming the Early Learning MultiMedia Manager at SWCDC, Karen was the School Age Education Specialist. Karen has also served as the Board President for the North Carolina Afterschool Coalition and worked as the Regional School Age Specialist for Region 7 providing technical assistance and training to afterschool professionals.

Karen has been employed with Southwestern Child Development Commission, Inc. since August of 2011. Karen’s work experience also includes More at Four Teacher with Gaston County Schools, Technical Assistant with the Partnership for Children of Lincoln/Gaston Counties, Adjunct Instructor at Gaston College in Gaston County, Director at Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church Child Care Center, and lead teacher at Ashford Academy.

Mary Fowler joins Southwestern Child Development Child Care Resource and Referral as a Technical Assistance and Training Consultant. Mary has over 30 years of experience working in a childcare facility as a teacher and a child care administrator. Mary brings to CCR&R, 12 years of management experience as a Center Director and has spent the last five years redeveloping her skills as a preschool teacher in the classroom. Mary also serves as a Facilitator in the CCR&R Children’s Trust Program. She teaches both Incredible Years and Circle of Parents classes in Macon, Jackson and Haywood Counties. She holds a Level 11 on the NC Early Educator Certificate and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Birth-Kindergarten with a minor in Early Childhood Education from Western Carolina University.


Mary enjoys spending time with her husband Sherman and three grandchildren.

Colin was born and raised in Virginia. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations from Radford University. Colin has worked in the North Carolina public school system since he settled in the state in 2015 and has supervised the largest after school program in his school district for the past few years. An advocate for embracing the community,he is constantly looking for different festivals, community service events, and local businesses.


In his spare time he enjoys spending time with family, watching sports, and doing voice overs for businesses and commercials. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree from Clemson University. Colin’s passions include motivating others, listening to or creating music, and protecting the environment. He looks forward to continuing to serve our state!
