'K-5 and 6-12 teachers face different challenges when working to implement the Illinois Learning Standards for Social Science. Join us as we have TWO ISBE Content Specialists here to address inquiry-based social science and the unique challenges of social science in various grade bands. This full-day workshop will not only discuss what inquiry is and why it’s important but will also focus on how to engage students in the social sciences using a five-stage inquiry process. Breakout time will be provided by grade-band to discuss the unique challenges and potential supports available specific to K-5 and 6-12 classrooms. All participants will leave with a variety of strategies and resources to support inquiry including some NEW resources created in 2019.

A large portion of the afternoon of this full-day training will be a chance to begin to incorporate what you’ve learned into your classroom and network with other colleagues from the area. Planning and work time will be provided with the opportunity to break up by grade level to collaborate and begin planning a unit to use this school year. Presenters will be available to provide guidance and answer questions as participants work. To maximize the effectiveness of your afternoon, please bring or have in mind curricular materials that you’d like to adapt into a unit of inquiry.
