The United States has a diverse population with minorities now comprising roughly one-third of the population. Further, the strong evidence of racial and ethnic oral health disparities warrants that health care professionals are equipped to work effectively with diverse groups. Cultural competency is a life-long process of examining values and beliefs while developing and applying an inclusive approach to healthcare practice. The goal of this course is to attain attitudes, knowledge and skills that enable a dental care professional to care effectively for patients from diverse cultures, groups and communities.

Dr. Richie Kohli, BDS, MS, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health and serves as an Associate Professor at Oregon Health & Science University, School of Dentistry in the United States of America (USA). Dr. Kohli has over 12 years of clinical, teaching and research experience. Her teaching responsibilities are primarily directed at teaching dental students the public health aspects of dentistry including cross-cultural communication in clinical settings. Dr. Kohli’s research is presently focused on responsible opioid prescribing in dentistry through project ECHO, geriatric dentistry, inter-professional collaboration, tele-dentistry and dental quality measures. She has secured substantial grants and co-authored on several publications with collaborators from different disciplines and Universities. Overall, she is very passionate about caring for the underserved population and loves to work in an interprofessional setting for well-rounded health care.
