“Didn’t you do the reading?!?”: Digital Tools to Support Students in Course Readings

Monday, August 26, 2019:  2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Do your students struggle with engaging deeply with assigned readings? Are you frustrated when students don’t complete the readings for class? Are you looking for an alternative to assigning written reading responses or discussion board posts? This workshop will introduce two digital tools Hypothes.is and Perusall that enable web-based annotation of course readings. Web-based annotation is the digital version of adding comments, notes and other marginalia to print-based texts and documents. Hypothes.is and Perusall both provide a platform for collaborative annotation of readings and a space for discussion tied directly to the text. This workshop will begin with an overview of the pedagogy of web-based annotation and research on how web-based annotation promotes student learning outcomes, such as completion of and engagement in readings. Next, annotation assignments using Hypothes.is and Perusall will be presented. Various instructional uses, reading strategies and diagnostic assessments afforded by these tools will be highlighted. Recommendations for designing reading assignments with these tools will be provided. Participants will receive handouts of curated resources for using Hypothes.is and Perusall.
