The Getting Started with Moodle workshop is aimed at faculty who are new to Moodle or need a refresher. This session considers general use of learning management systems (LMS), and how this technology might be used to enhance teaching and learning. It provides an overview of Moodle functionality, considers issues about site navigation and course design to align with your syllabus and teaching goals. Instructor-led demonstration and lecture. Participants will be encouraged to participate hands-on and apply the skills on their Moodle course(s) during the workshop. There will be time to ask questions. A handout will be provided.



Session Outcomes

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:


  • Set up and begin teaching using Moodle to support their courses.

  • Add Moodle course content that aligns with the syllabus and learning goals

  • Add Resources and Activities

  • Use Moodle's communication features to effectively engage with students outside the classroom

Workshop Length

90 minutes: 1 hour plus additional half hour for open Q & A

  • Overview of the Dashboard

  • How to align Moodle functionality with course goals and syllabus

  • Adding files, editing text and course sections

  • Adding Blocks and Plug-ins

  • Using the new Calendar

  • Activities (require student participation and submission of information): What's available and how to set up

  • Resources (provide information for students): What's available and how to set up

  • Communicating with Students

  • Backing up and Reusing your course
